The latest venture, Lee Se Young and Na In Woo is currently gaining audiences' attention. After their stellar performance in last year’s What Comes After Love and Marry My Husband, the duo are sharing the screen for the first time. This bittersweet romance encapsulates the journey of two childhood friends who were each other’s first love and were separated for a while.
The opening scene establishes the stage for Kang Hee. Surrounded by a group of kids similar to her age, she is different. Her freckles, curly hair, and different eyeball girl scream her biracial identity.
This is the first time, a Korean drama has decided to explore the painstaking journey of mixed-culture children through a main character.
The scene soon shifts to Yeon Soo who is obese. His equation is smoother with Kang Hee’s father than with the girl herself. He eats and drinks with him and shares a better bond. Kang Hee is beautiful and attractive, yet she is unsure of her presence. She keeps on hiding in the dark even before her best friend. As Yeon Soo is fat and receiving a gift of a huge teddy bear sheds light on the painstaking distinction people face when they are different. In the present, Kang Hee even appears in darkness and throws a light on Yeon Soo’s face. She calls him a teddy bear and even squeezes his fat bones.
It is not love yet. But the intimacy happened faster in their romance. It may be the reason for their comprehending trust and compatibility that have built over time. Intimacy is not something exploration but an obvious state of mind happening over time. So, they slept together, because Kang Hee wanted to be his first. It is her identity and self-esteem that is bothering her. She is seeking herself through other’s eyes. She is seeking a place where no one is aware of her true identity. She calls his father by his name- Chun Pil. It keeps on reminding her that she is his mistake. The growing distance between the after-daughter duo is responsible for leaving Kang Hee damaged.
The story starts again after ten years where Kang Hee is seen working in a construction site in Seoul. The girl who vowed to never return to her hometown fails to find a place for herself in the city. Her heart which picked Yeon Soo has been broken and her already broken self-esteem has been walked all over the entire time.
Over time Yeon Soo is strong and bold. He works as a vet student and has been happily living in his hometown village. He is different from his younger self but the essence of his innocence is still there. Kang Hee’s struggle has not ended. Her quest to have a home and an identity despite not being judged for her different appearance is still far from being accomplished. She gets belittled at her workplace and fellow workers even manhandle her. She is lonely as she is all by herself in the new place.
Four episodes have already been aired and the story is giving a classic vibe. Breaking through stereotypes and gender-biased loves, Motel California is delving into a potential classic tale that has a lot to unfold.
